Gear Clearance Shim Stock

The shop reeked of burnt “Tin Can” brushes and Rotor Juice, the air thick with KC’s obsession. Hunched over his pit area, he fine-tuned his GTP Flexi, its sleek, low-slung chassis gleaming under the magnifying lamp. The gears, exposed like the heart of a tiny machine, demanded perfect meshing—too tight, and the car would bind; too loose, and it’d bleed speed. KC is a precision fanatic.

He rummaged through his pit box, but his shims were gone. “Dammit,” he muttered, scanning the cluttered pit area. His eyes caught a pack of rolling papers, ultra-thin, stashed behind a stack of tubes filled with pre-ground tires. A sly grin spread across his face. “Let’s make this work.”

KC grabbed a single rolling paper, its 0.02mm thickness ideal for the razor-fine clearance his GTP Flexi demanded. He headed over to the track, where the notorious, elevation-shifting track with brutal turns—waited. He ran the car for a test lap. The motor snarled, but a faint grind screamed gears too tight.

He loosened the motor screws, slipped a folded rolling paper between the pinion and spur gear, and tightened just enough to capture the paper’s slim gap. The gears now had a perfect whisper of space—free to spin, yet tight enough to bite. He pulled the paper free, feeling the precise resistance he craved.

Back on the track, KC jammed the controller. The GTP Flexi roared, clawing up the inclines and slicing through corners with lethal precision, its flex chassis mastering the track’s demands. The rolling paper hack had nailed it, outdoing any shim he’d tried. He could already picture Joe’s shock when his GTP ate dust at the race.

KC stashed the rolling papers back in the pit area, no longer just party relics. In the 1:24-scale world, they were his edge, his key to conquering the track
